The Roman bridge, symbol of Rimini with the Arch of Augustus, built over the river Marecchia (the Ariminus that gave his name to the colony) interprets the architectural taste of the early imperial age, a perfect synthesis of functionality and celebratory. The work in fact is part of the urban redevelopment of Ariminum begun by Augustus in 27 B C with the honorary arch, erected in city gate at the point where the Flaminia Street flowed into decumannus. At the opposite end of the decumanus, Augustus began, in 14 (year of his death), the construction of the bridge, continued and completed by his successor Tiberius in 21.
